  ‘Night Visions’ Exhibition Pulls All-Nighter for Area Photographers, Offering Guaranteed Georgetown Display     Drawing on the huge success of last year’s inaugural celebration of photography, FotoWeek/DC will this year host “N  ight Visions,” an open-to-all-comers exhibition, the very content of which will not be determined until the end of a frenzied all- night shoot and editing session centered in, though not limited to, Washington, DC.   
The purpose of the “Night Visions” exhibition is to recreate the adrenalin rush of a photo student’s end-of-term all- nighter or a professional’s laser-focused intensity against a drop- dead deadline.  
“It’s all about sucking it up, creating an image, meeting the deadline and doing something great,” declared Washington photographer Peter Garfield, one of "Night Visions" originators.   Images selected by a team of veteran, nationally known photography editors will be printed and displayed—literally within hours of their selection—at FotoWeek Central 1, 3338 M Street NW in Georgetown during an all-night edit-cum-photo-party featuring free snacks, coffee, music and a cash bar.

Photos will be on display for a week. Everyone who takes part in “Night Visions” is guaranteed a spot on the wall.  The concept is simple; the rules minimal:  
Any participant, amateur, student or professional, will be asked to submit up to 30 digital images created during the hours from sundown to sun-up Saturday night, November 7th. from which one will be selected for display. All forms of photography are eligible: landscape, still life, portraiture, documentary—you name it. Though most images are likely to be made in the Washington area, there are no restrictions here either—just that every photo be made that night.  
 Once finished, the photographer will be required to hand-carry the digital images (in camera, or on disk,) to FotoWeek Central where they will be downloaded and displayed to a panel of photo editors, rotating throughout the night between the hours of 6pm Saturday the 7th until 6am, Sunday the 8th. The editors will select one great image from each photographer’s take to be printed and displayed during a week-long celebration of the Washington area’s local photography talent.  
“We want this to be the shared experience of a photo class or a photo shoot, in which everyone gets together, talking photography and meeting their colleagues in a great atmosphere –and at a great party.” Peter Garfield said.

No one can speak up for your rights better than you. In fact, there are a lot of people who don’t want you to stand up for your rights. But, as a creator, you know that maintaining ownership of your work is important. And having the freedom to choose how you copy, use, and distribute your work is also necessary for your success and livelihood.

ASMP, along with other organizations in the Copyright Alliance, is urging photographers to sign an online letter to tell the President and Vice President that you want your creative work to be recognized and respected. The letter has not yet been launched to the public, as we want many artists to sign the letter before it is released to the public for other creators’ signatures.

Our goal is to get at least 1500 signatures by artists and creators by Friday, September 25.

It’s easy to sign the letter. Just enter your name, artist type, city, state, and email and hit “sign”.

UNDERSTANDING LIGHTING RATIOS

It's easier than you think
by Chuck McKern

Once you have your basic lighting equipment and your basic lighting techniques down, your next step is to learn lighting ratios. If you understand these ratios, it is much easier to control your lighting to create mood, add a sense of depth or shape, and control the way textured surfaces look. People are intimidated by the term "lighting ratios". After all "ratio" implies math, and people hate math. But by the end of this short article you'll see how easy lighting ratios really are.

Most people realize that a studio lighting set-up can use 3 or 4 lights. They get intimidated thinking about how they're going to figure out how all those lights will work together and what the lighting ratios will be. Well guess what, you only need to worry about two lights: the main light and the fill light! These are the two lights that "shape" your image. Any other supplemental lights only "accent" your image, and don't need to be included in the ratio.

To find your lighting ratio, start by calculating the square root of pi - just kidding. You start by determining the output of your main and fill lights individually. The best way to do this is to set up your lights and take a meter reading. Block one of the lights. I like to use the black side of a light disc, so that you're only metering the unblocked light. Then do the same thing with the first light.

Now, what is the ratio? In a nutshell, the ratio is the difference between the main light and the fill. If your main light were twice as bright as your fill, the ratio would be 2:1. Thinking about exposure factors, a factor of 2 is equal to one stop of exposure, and if you increase your exposure by one stop, you are allowing in twice the amount of light.

Therefore, a 2:1 ratio would mean that there is a one-stop difference between the lights. A 3:1 ratio would be a stop and a half difference, and 4:1 would be a two-stop difference.

The thing to remember when dealing with the ratios is that you multiply or divide by 2. This means that if you want to determine how much exposure difference there is in a ratio of 5:1, you would divide 5 by 2. The answer would be 2 1/2 stops. If you had a scene with a 2 1/2 stop difference between the lights and you wanted to determine the ratio, you would multiply 2 1/2 by 2 and would give you 5 for a 5:1 ratio. I told you the math wouldn't be hard!

I don't recommend using ratios beyond 8:1. If you do, you'll have shadow areas with little or no visible detail. I've included a chart that shows the most common lighting ratios with the exposure difference and how that lighting ratio is most commonly used.

OHHH YEAH! So Nike did a video on their revolutionary Air Max (1) Maxim. Some of you that are cool with me know how much i love anything tiltshift, so of course i fell in love with this video from nike. Source tells me that they used a 24 tiltshift....and thats all. She didnt tell me what camera they used, but I'm guessing it had to be a Canon 5D Mark II.

WHO: In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Artomatic will be bringing its trademark one-of-a-kind multimedia arts event to Half Street’s 55 M St, SE in D.C.’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood in 2009. In 2008, Artomatic attracted 52,500 visitors and 1,540 participating artists.

In conjunction with the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District and Monument Realty, Artomatic will be presenting more than five weeks of art, music, theater, workshops and more — all of it free for visitors. Artomatic is a nonprofit organization headed by a volunteer Board of Directors. It is funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

WHAT: Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic transforms an unfinished indoor space into an exciting and diverse arts event that is free and open to the public. Born in a small city of Northern India known as Kurukshetra, I did my schooling from there and then moved to Chandigarh for college and to play cricket professionally. But a shoulder injury ruined my career as a cricketer and I came back to my home city and took addmission in LL.B. Coming from a city like Chandigarh I didn’t have anything much to do in Kurukshetra (which is a very small town in comparison), So I bought a Digital Camera (Canon 350D) and got hooked to Photography, as luck had it I won Digital Camera Magazine’s “Photographer of the Year” competition. The fact that I am able to capture a moment in time that is never going to come again is simply very exciting for me….. and the fact that nobody can ever replicate it… No matter what…

Now, Me and My Camera are inseparable……Some of my hobbies include Playing Cricket, Watching Movies (Not Mainstream), Listening to Music and of course Photography (which has become a passion now)

Well the first DC Shooters RoundUp has passed and too bad you missed it! Although we were a bit short on "talent" we started bringing together the photography scene here in DC. This ain't NYC, that's right! It's DC!!! Skate-GOD "Chris" AKA - Chris - saved the day with his aerial acrobatics. Thanks for saving the day. We also had a number of families and kids wanting photographs. Thanks to Penn Camera for supplying play toys, a ThinkTank bag give away and CDIA for use of the space and great equipment.

Well keep your eyes pealed for the next one in a few months (late spring-early summer) We'll be looking for another venue that has some "outside" accessibility for shooting. We even had the "boys" from Boston come down - Thanks much to Chris and Steve!

I would probably forget someone if I tried to name names, but the CDIA student and staff participation was great - this would never happened without you all - thanks!

HERE WE GO!

Looks to be a well attended event and we are all getting very excited about it. Here are a few reminders:

1. When arriving to the school you must sign the "waiver" form before entering the event.

2. This include "talent".

3. We will have sets already to go and rung out so you should be able to go right to it.

4. We will have students and faculty on hand to assist and help out on as needed on the sets. As well as Penn Camera.

5. Please - be cooperative! No hogging the set or holding talent hostage for images. This is a casual, fun event intended for sharing information and resources as well as networking.

6. A brief demo will take place around mid-way through.

7. The school is donating the space and equipment - treat it nice!

I have been getting an enormous amount of questions regarding how this thing will go and understandably so, it is new! Basically we will have 4-5 sets in the large studio at CDIA that will have a student assigned to them to help out and assist with controlling the lighting. There is no schedule or sign up sheet and although it sounds crazy it forces us all to form a community so everyone can participate. This does require one thing - cooperation! Photographers should not take too much time on a set - remember this is down and dirty! Talent - come in to the studio and make yourself available to me or any of the students or simply introduce yourself and find someone to participate in what you want to do. If everyone cooperates and shares resources and knowledge this can be and will be a great experience. So here are my limited rules of engagement:

1. Photographers - do not hog the set, take your shots then help out (just a thought)

2. Photographers - do not charge the talent for the images! - they are providing services for free

* I am all for networking and people meeting people but do not hold anyone hostage for images

3. Talent - that said - do not expect retouched prints you may just be able to get the digital file.

*one intention here is to possibly introduce people and evolve future work

*also - most are not going to be pro's so everybody ha something to learn - ask questions!

Listen - if we all put on our adult hats this will be the first of many of these events and we will soon out grow the single studio of CDIA. There will be kids there so everyone is expected to behave accordingly or will be asked to leave - I hope this does not happen. It is my hope that we can show people that as a community we can all get together to share talents and resources so everybody wins - frankly the event depends on it. Finally, Penn Camera will be bringing a few toys for photographers to try out and we are trying to put together a couple of brief demos by a few pros. Thanks

Fellow photographer and close friend, Rob Van Petten was given (or more accurately - earned) the honor of shooting Nikons newest Flagship camera the D3x. was fortunate to be part of this shoot acting as Rob's digital assistant as were Meagan Rutkowski and Jason Colston (both CDIA students). This is OUR event!. I am getting the place, equipment, vendor and demos planned and in place. The rest is really up to all of you out there. We really want to drive as many area photographers to this event to learn, share, photograph, network and just have a ton of fun. We also NEED talent - people to photograph. Models, actors, dancers, body builders, skateboarders you name it - if they want to be photographed then they should be there. PORTFOLIO SHOOT - NEED TALENT!

I am looking to partner with at least one photographer in creating the newest image for my book. I am looking to really push all aspects of the shoot. We will probably shoot with a medium format Leaf back on a Mamiya 645 body. I want it to be a composite-hdr of sorts - nothing obvious - everything subtle but very high end. If you want to get some ideas then check out these sites for general direction. I want this to be a collaboration - so I am looking for people that I can work with. There is NO pay but I am looking to produce images that are state of the art. (whatever that means)

On March 22nd we will have our first ROUND UP at CDIA located at 1055 Thomas Jefferson Street NW in studio A. This event will be sponsored by Penn Camera who will,be at the event to provide access to new gear as well as putting on a demo. All photo people are invited so whether you take pictures or would like to have pictures taken you need t be there.
Models, Bikers, Skateboarder, Dancers, Performers of all kinds. We will have a number of studio set ups and students on hand to assist if necessary. Bring gear if you need to but we will have more than enough on hand. The intention in to mirror the RoundUp put on by Chase Jarvis and the Strobist on the west coast. Informal - Fun - Informative

Hey All. I am (maybe not so proud) to admit that during the recent Printing Workshop held by Bob Korn here at CDIA, that I was distracted by Kevin Good and made the error of not de-selecting Color Management in the Epson print window while printing (see above). That's right, I truly feel that Kevin should be held entirely accountable for this oversight, after all he is Kevin (ACE) Good. All kidding aside I made an error in not setting up my printing workflow and suffered the results (again see above). So next time you are printing and the images are looking like crap stop looking at the guy next to you or for a rep from Adobe and check your settings.

Q&A: August Bradley, Los Angeles

“The stylization is so dependant on the lighting,” Bradley explains. “It's exaggerated, but building on tones that are all there in the way the image was lit. Tonality and mood come 80% from lighting, 20% from post. Color comes from precisely defined palettes for wardrobe and set design, with overall tweaks to enhance mood applied in post. The look would be impossible without very controlled, deliberate lighting shot in-camera. All things equal, I prefer to capture as much as possible in-camera because it's more efficient and avoids a lot of complications. My hair and makeup team knows to make things as finished as possible in-camera; we never rely on a fix-it-in-post mentality. Post is for taking something to new heights in ways the camera cannot, not for correcting photographic mistakes.”

CDIA student gallery is about to take flight. February 26th at 6:00PM we will be meeting at CDIA to kick off the beginning of this exciting time. Although running through CDIA students all DCShooters are welcome to attend the meeting and be involved. This first meeting will be an introduction of the plans and what will be involved.

DIGITAL SEPARATION!

Thanks to digital I don't have to file my slides in shoe boxes - do you remember this? If I have a dime for every gigabyte of storage I have, I would be rich! If you have ever assisted in a shoot as a Digital Artist or Tech, then you know how necessary and valuable you and your skills are now.

It seems as though in a number of circles, retouchers are playing more than a technical function in the workflow. Now there even are hints of a Digital Asset Management role in addition to retouching. Now admittedly this is not the case for all photography, but where it is, it is growing.

It is difficult to imagine someone trying to master the photography, asset management and retouching let alone the printing. I think photographers now are more savvy and involved in making the image front to back, but are also realizing that in order to stay behind the camera they need someone to rely on in front of the computer. I for one am all for these creative partnerships and think the future image makers will need to embrace this more and more. The vision can still be the photographers and the execution can be the digital artists, but as a creative as well, I think the retouchers of the world have a whole lot to offer and can take some photography to new heights.

Well the time has come to plan out first round up, stay tuned as I assemble the details on the day and reserve space at CDIA. It will be a day of shooting, networking, information exchange, a brief demo and a lot of photo fun! So get those batteries charged and CF cards formatted - oh yeah tell your friends as we hope to hit this first pitch out of the park. Photographer, dancers, models, athletes and others are welcome, so if you need to be photographed, want to be photographed or just think it would cool to see you mid-air of some cool skateboarding trick - you need to attend!

I will post the details on exact time and such very soon so stay tuned. Also we wil have a bunch of equipment there but anything you bring along is welcome. Network-Network-Network

THOSE PESKY LITTLE BEAUTIFUL SPEEDLIGHTS!

We have all probably been in many situations were having the sheer power of the sun was required on an advertising shoot to light up the side of a models face. Oh and let's not forget about bouncing in a little fill light if that's not enough, right? WRONG! Keep in mind as I write this I still consider myself a studio-produced image type guy - but people lets be real - how much juice do you need? I find myself viewing a growing number of situations where things called "speedlights" are showing their moxi. In fact in some cases not as a back up but a preferred solution to the mounting problems location and event types encounter everyday. Now I won't go as far as saying they are an adequate substitution for the standard studio pack and heads on a big ad shoot in LA,(I always wanted to say "LA") but the "super" power boxes of pure sunlight are hardly necessary either. The right tool for the right job I think, and there are more and more jobs that those small little boxes of light work just fine and in fact can be more flexible and a BETTER solution. Now the cost is certainly not cheap but they have certainly upped the anti in performance value. These babies have gone Hollywood. No longer a single flash mounted to the top of your camera throwing off horrible light. It is now multiple units, sometimes all of which are "off" camera and fired through a system that allows for lighting ratios and power compensation. Now admittedly I am certainly no expert on this, but as per usual have an opinion. I have asked fellow teachers, students and photographers to share insight and techniques that will serve to help those out there not able or in need to harness the power of the sun and just are after great pictures.

It is this writers opinion that although stock has taken a place in the history of our industry it has not been without its problems. Personally I think the "lifestyle" aspects and attention to the basic elements of composition can serve newcomers well, but also be a bit confusing in that quite frankly there is a portion of crap out there. I do agree (thankfully) with the optimistic photogs out there that are starting to feel a turn in advertisers needs for producing quality imagery ad utilizing the creative aspects and vision of the photographer they hired once upon a time.

Finally recognizing and appreciating the efforts and point of view of our industries artistic force.

The days of editing down a shoot of 500-1,000 images down to the one or two worthy of the post work and producing required to make images that are not just OK or adequate - they are sensational. Could we get back to where we once were? Have we learned anything from this brief (or not so brief) hiatus. Who knows for sure - I am hopeful that better days are to come.

They finally came out with a Nikon version of the breeze software I use to capture multiple exposures for HDR's that require more then 3 shots which the Canon is limited too...It may not be as useful for Nikon users but worth mentioning since we were discussing it. Steve Maxwell

Anxious I know!

Some people have entered more than one image for the month of January and although I love the enthusiasm, we need to keep it to one per month for now until we get a feel for how it will all play out. If you could go into the pool and leave the strongest and remove the others, that would be great. If this ends up being something we need to administrate then send and email with the info on which ones to remove. Chris Alvanas
